Abstract

Too often, in large-scale service provision, people who have learning disabilities are treated as a group, with rigid routines, limited choice and lack of personal contact. An approach which recognises the importance of respect for individual needs and preferences combined with structured goal setting and follow-up evaluation can significantly enhance the acquisition of vital andempowering independent coping skills.
